RESETTING THE CELEBRATION OF MAGAYON FESTIVAL IN ALBAY FROM MAY TO APRIL BEGINNING APRIL 2008 AND YEARLY THEREAFTER

WHEREAS, the Province of Albay has set in My, beginning year 1999 and yearly thereafter, the celebration of Magayon Festival pursuant to Governor’s Proclamation No. 6, issued December 18, 1998;

WHEREAS, the Magayon Festival draws its inspiration from the famed legend of Daragang Magayon and the beauty of the ever-majestic Mayon Volcano, the leading landmark and tourist destination in Albay and in the Bicol Region and to showcase the province’s rich historical and cultural wealth, its products and industries, the rare charm and loveliness, and most of all, the Albayano’s intrinsic hospitality and to highlight the great potentials of Albay in the world map as a trade, investment and tourist destination;

WHEREAS, in year 2007, pursuant to a joint Administrative Order No. 01-2007, signed by the Honorable Fernando V. Gonzalez, then Governor, and the Honorable Legazpi City Mayor Noel E. Rosal, since Albay province was severely devastated by the past typhoons, particularly Typhoon “Reming” on November 30, 2006, the province and Legazpi City, its capital city, agreed to an austere joint celebration May 21-31, 2007, of the Magayon Festival and the Ibalong Festival of Legazpi City which was being celebrated in October;

WHEREAS, the province opts to revert back to a separate celebration of Magayon Festival and reset the same from May to April to stage early activities of the Festival before the School-Year ends, beginning this year 2008, and yearly thereafter;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOEY SARTE-SALCEDA, Governor of the Province of Albay, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do order and proclaim that the celebration of Magayon Festival in the Province of Albay be as it hereby is reset from May to April beginning this year 2008 and yearly thereafter.

Al Local Government Units of Albay, the Departments and Offices of the Provincial Government, National Government Agencies, and Non-Government Organizations in Albay, schools, colleges and universities, public and private, the religious, business, civic and other sectors, and all Albayanos, here or elsewhere, are hereby enjoined to lend their cooperation and support for the success of the yearly celebration of Magayon Festival.

This Proclamation supersedes or alters previous issuances which may be inconsistent herewith.

Done this 17th day of January 2008 in Legazpi City, Province of Albay, Philippines.

History

The Festival 
In observance of its foundation day and celebrating the legend of Mayon Volcano, the Province of Albay holds Magayon Festival in the whole month of May. The festival is a celebration of life and its abundance of blessings, blending strong Catholic beliefs and aspects of traditional way of living in Albay, giving the feast an identity of its own.
