Albay celebrating Magayon Festival; Activities readied

            The Provincial Government of Albay has set a series of activities for the celebration of Magayon Festival this month.

            The provionce used to celebrate the festival, but this was set aside for some time due to more pressing concerns, provincial official said.

            Recently, a series of calamities hit Albay.

            But the provincial government is reviving the festival as it moves towards reclaiming its title as one of the top tourist destination on the country.

            The month of April is set for the celebration of Magayon Festival.

            Launched in 1999, the Magyon Festival relives the province’s fistorical and cultural heritage.

            The word “magayon” is a Bicolano term which means “beautiful.”

            It is said that the festival was inspired by the legend of Mayon Volcano. It is believed that the tragic love story of Daragang magayon and Panganoron gave birth to the volcano.

            The grave of Magayon became the Mayon Volcano while the cloud kissing her is Panganoron.

            Carrying the theme “ Albay Rising,” the month- long revelry highlights the various aspect of the good life in the province.

            The activities lined up for the festival are expected to attract national and foreign visitors alike.

            The activities include the art exhibits, Bicol songwriting contest, chorale competitions, Academic Olympics, school fairs, International Youth Congress on Climate Change, job fairs, trade exhibits,”tiangge,” garden show, livelihood fair, Magayon Culinaria, children’s day, senior citizen’s day, educator’s night, and sports activities.

            Other event are the Search for Mutya ng Magayon,street dancing, magayon day, Mr. Magayonm, Mr & Mrs. Bikini Summit, Kasalon magayon, Rocklakan magayon (concert), and sibidan dance.
